MARCUS BARTLETT

Marcus is a WSB institution.  He joined WSB in 1930 as a part time piano player, bedtime story teller and staff announcer.  In 1940 he finally decided to make WSB his life, where he went on to serve as production director, sports announcer, music director and other odd jobs.  He later made the move to WSB TV.  He moved up the ladder to become executive vice president for Cox Broadcasting.  He retired from Cox Broadcasting in December 1975.  Read the complete history of Marcus Bartlett and hear a clip from a broadcast in the 1930's at our special tribute page.  •Click here for that.


PRIOR: Marcus worked part time at WSB while still a college student.

TODAY: (2008) Retired and living in Atlanta

MORGAN BLAKE

Sportswriter for the Atlanta Journal – he often broadcast sports commentaries on WSB Radio.  Known for his coverage of legendary golfer Bobby Jones.

 

FRANK CROWTHER

Announcer who was an early play-by-play sports broadcaster – calling local high school games on WSB.  Frank went by the on-air nickname "Red Cross".

JAMES COX

Governor of Ohio who in December 1939 purchases The Atlanta Journal and WSB Radio.  This begins a company that today is known as Cox Enterprises which still owns the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and is majority owner through Cox Radio of many radio stations, including WSB Radio. 

DOUGLAS EDWARDS

"Douglas Edwards - CBS News" Close your eyes and you can almost  hear that booming voice from CBS Radio and TV where Edwards became an icon of broadcasting.  In his early days, he honed his craft at WSB Radio. He worked both as a member of the radio news staff at and as an assistant news editor on the Atlanta Journal.  He left in 1938 to work at WXYZ in Detroit, but returned to WSB in 1940 as assistant news director. 


PRIOR: WAGF Dothan Alabama
AFTER: In 1942 he moved to CBS in New York as a staff announcer and in  1943 he took over as anchor of the nightly 15 minute news program The World Today, the Sunday afternoon program World News Today and the Sunday night program Report to the Nation.
DIED: October 1990

ELI FRISCH

Featured actor in the locally produced dramatic program Symphony of Life.

FRITZ HIRSCH

Announcer – credited as being the first Georgian to sell a radio commercial in 1930.  Hirsch died a year later in 1931. 

HUGH IVEY

News reporter for WSB Radio during the 30’s.  One of a team that broadcast details of the festivities surrounding the premier of the movie Gone With The Wind.
