Chuck McClure was one of the dominant names in Georgia radio, known for his ownership of radio stations throughout Georgia, most notably in Columbus where he settled in the latter part of his life. He was a legendary broadcast pioneer and an icon in the radio business. McClure was an announcer at WSB Radio in the 1940’s, but rather than stay on with WSB, he would move on to run his own radio stations, first in Athens at the now famous WRFC. From there he would move on to Columbus in the 1950’s where he would become a dominant figure in that city and a dominant figure in Georgia’s radio community. In 1957 he would also join up with other WSB alumns Mike McDougald and Bob Peterson to put a station on the air in Canton, north of Atlanta (WCHK). From the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer July 20, 2004 the following was written about Chuck McClure: “He was an icon in this business. He set a standard of excellence in local broadcasting. His kind of programming often allowed the public to have a voice.” (Greg Davis, owner of WFXE-FM on Chuck McClure.) Chuck McClure’s chapter in the radio history of Columbus, GA extends back to the early ‘50s, when he left Athens to purchase WGBA-AM (GBA stood for Georgia bordering Alabama). Over the next four decades, McClure Broadcasting became one of the dominant players in the local media. McClure was a versatile journalist with experience in print as well as electronic media. Not long after graduating with a degree in journalism from the University of Georgia, he was one of the founders of the Athens Daily News. But it was in radio that he made his mark. He served his country as well as his community. McClure was a decorated combat pilot in World War II and retired from the Air Force Reserve with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Columbus has lost one of its most involved and public-spirited citizens, and his family a devoted husband and father. Chuck McClure will be missed.
